Stay on top of the semester with the Tutoring and Learning Center
As midterms approach, juggling classes, social commitments and self-care can feel daunting. Luckily, drop-in tutoring sessions, academic coaching, peer-assisted learning sessions, and more help you take control of your studies and add study strategies to your tool belt.
The Tutoring and Learning Center in Cook Library provides a wealth of resources to support your academic well-being. On average, students who attended academic coaching in Fall 2023 had a GPA increase of 0.15. Over 3,000 students utilize TLC services annually, resulting in approximately 15,000 visits.
Students who attend seven or more Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions are more than 37% more likely to pass the course and, on average, obtain a B-/B grade.
Whether you're striving to get ahead, struggling with a concept in class, or looking for ways to balance competing priorities, friendly peer leaders in the TLC are here to support your academic progress and goals.
鈥漇tudents benefit from working together on challenging course topics, refining how they approach learning, and helping other students at the TLC," says Elizabeth Scarbrough, director of the TLC, "These skills will apply throughout their time at 小草社区 and strengthen the independent learning required in their professional careers.鈥
The services provided by the Tutoring and Learning Center can and should be accessed throughout your time at 小草社区. Here are a few to get you started.
Peer Assisted Learning Sessions (PALS)
If you鈥檝e considered withdrawing from a course, you鈥檙e not alone. Before taking such a step, consider connecting with a tutor through PALS. Peer Assisted Learning Sessions (PALS) connect you with experienced peer tutors for weekly drop-in group sessions or offer test reviews in preparation for exams.
Each session, specific topics related to current material in the given course are reviewed, and you have the opportunity to work on example problems together and ask questions.
Appointment-based and Drop-in Tutoring
Tutoring in the TLC offers study resources for many courses. Depending on the subject, tutoring is provided via small group appointments or drop-in sessions.
Appointment-based tutoring sessions enable you to plan your tutoring goals and provide consistent, long-term support. Current offerings include business, liberal arts, mathematics, music and natural sciences.
Drop-in Tutoring sessions are a convenient way to review and ask questions about a specific lesson or topic you identify. Sessions are offered for courses in computer & information sciences, mathematics and natural sciences.

Academic Coaching
Looking to improve your study skills? Coaching sessions enable you to discuss and review learning strategies and study skills in a way that is focused on achieving your study goals.
Your academic coach will help you establish and reinforce your time management and organization skills, and recommend ways to study more effectively.
Academic coaching through the TLC enables Tigers to increase their proficiency in fundamental learning and organization skills that last a lifetime.

Supplemental Instruction (SI)
Looking to review for a class weekly in a dedicated environment? Supplemental instruction leaders are here to help.
Peer leaders attend class with students currently enrolled in courses that offer SI each week and host regularly scheduled review sessions 鈥 all you have to do is bring your course materials and be ready to engage.
SI sessions focus on the most critical and challenging material already covered in the course and enable you to reflect on the material you鈥檝e learned to retain it in the long term better.
Depending on the semester, SI sessions are offered for select sections of biology and economics courses.
Study Groups
Do you absorb information better in a shared space? The TLC encourages you to form study groups with classmates and offers tips to help you form study groups and maintain them throughout the semester.
Academic and residential buildings across campus have specific study spaces for you to gather. If you prefer a quieter place, Study Group Rooms on the second floor of Cook Library can be . Reserve these rooms in advance to best prepare for your study sessions.
Unsure where to start? Try out these study group formation tips and tricks from the TLC.
- Get to know your classmates before and after class and during term breaks. Identify which students are genuinely committed to their studies and would be effective contributors in a group setting.
- Invite students to meet with you to study.
- Study in a location where you are likely to see students from your class, then ask a classmate a question about the subject matter, and begin a discussion.
- Make sure your goals align with those of the group. Work with students who pay attention, ask questions, take notes and have knowledge to share.
